Story

Founded in 1983 by newly graduated visual arts students, Atelier Silex was born from their desire to come together to share the space and equipment needed to carry out artistic projects in stone sculpture.

Becoming the owner of its premises in 1987, the group carried out major construction and renovation work from the end of the 1990s. At that time, it acquired a showroom – Espace 0…3/4 – which allows it to host research, dissemination and production activities. In 1997, an artists' residence was set up on the premises, thus offering the possibility of receiving artists from other regions and countries. In 2005-2006, Atelier Silex brought its entire building up to standard. To date, Atelier Silex offers 600 m2 of production workshops and 200 m2 of rooms reserved for distribution and artistic research.

By evolving with the ever-increasing number of its members and their diversified artistic practice, Atelier Silex has gradually equipped itself with specialized equipment for working with wood, metal, ceramics and glass. While keeping its vocation, Atelier Silex makes room for digital manufacturing processes and responds to the demand for the establishment of a digital studio.

The expertise of the members gives complementary assets to the operation of the Silex Workshop. Indeed, their technical and conceptual know-how regarding the realizations and the reflections on the integration of the work of art in the public space is without a doubt one of the strengths of the center. This expertise, recognized by the artistic community, supports and nourishes sculptural research within the Atelier and in the world of arts and culture.

The Atelier Silex presents itself as a workshop specialized in sculpture which opens up to multidisciplinarity, and also as a stimulating environment where artists of different generations and experiences can exchange their know-how and their artistic reflections. This is how Atelier Silex acts as a springboard for the next generation and for emerging cultural initiatives, which makes this artists' center an essential institution in the cultural avant-garde of the territory.

Structuring partner that offers artists a place and an infrastructure to create works and events under professional conditions. The center also promotes the development of their careers in the world of contemporary art and their entrepreneurial potential.

Place of exchanges and meetings which allows artists and the community to benefit from relevant information (workshops, conferences, discussions); a place also open to the public, which thus gives privileged access to the artistic community and allows artists to initiate collaborations with the community.

Production workshop dedicated to creation. The center offers various workspaces, a wide variety of equipment and tools as well as solid expertise in the production of public works of art (Policy for integrating the arts into architecture).

Mandate

Atelier Silex offers specialized spaces and equipment to emerging or professional artists and supports them in the development of their careers in contemporary art.

The artists' center has as main mission the promotion, the development and research in spatial arts from the perspective of new practices in contemporary art.

Under this mandate, Atelier Silex assumes several roles.
